At 11:47 one night, I was staring at an email that had made me angry. I had a reply ready. It was precise, deserved, and sharp enough that I knew the recipient would feel it.

The Last Ten Seconds
A decision can acquire a surprisingly long history in ten seconds.
There is the message on the screen, the tone I hear in it, the tension in my jaw, and the sentence already forming in my head. There is how much sleep I had, whether I have eaten, what happened in the meeting before it, and whether the same person has annoyed me five times or fifty.
None of these needs to force a particular response on its own. Causes rarely arrive wearing labels that say, “This one determined the outcome.” They alter what I notice, how threatening something feels, which memories are available, and which consequences seem important.
If I close the laptop, ring a friend, or wait until morning, I introduce new causes. The angry reply may stop feeling clever. A missing piece of context may become obvious. My concern for the relationship may become louder than my desire to win.
That does not bypass the choice. It changes the person doing the choosing.
When I explain the decision by saying, “I realised sending it would make things worse”, I have given a genuine reason. I have not reached an uncaused beginning. Why did that consequence matter to me? Why did I remember it then? Why was I able to pause this time when I have failed to pause at others?
Every answer opens another part of the history.
The Years Before the Moment
Some causes operate over seconds. Others began before I could form a sentence.
Temperament, attention, impulse control, fear, trust, and sensitivity to reward all develop through an interaction between biology and experience. The old argument between nature and nurture makes this sound like a competition, but development does not work that way.
A National Academies review describes it as “nature through nurture”. Genes are expressed in cellular and social environments. Experiences affect developing brains. A child’s inherited characteristics can also affect how other people respond to them, changing the environment that then shapes the child.
The arrows run in both directions.
This is why a heritability estimate is not a percentage of a person caused by genes. It describes variation in a particular population, living in a particular range of environments, at a particular time. A highly heritable characteristic can still be changed by environmental conditions. Genetic influence is not a sentence handed down at conception.
Environment is not a clean alternative either. Two siblings can live through the same family event and experience it differently. Their ages, temperaments, relationships, and previous experiences are already different. What happens next depends on what the event happens to.
By adulthood, these interactions have been running for decades. The person choosing has been shaped by parents, friends, illness, safety, stress, teachers, accidents, opportunities, and thousands of repetitions that became habits.
I did not choose the nervous system with which I began. I did not choose my earliest environment. By the time I became capable of reflecting on either, both had already helped shape what reflection felt like and what I found worth changing.
Culture Is Inside the Choice
Culture is sometimes described as an outside pressure acting on an otherwise independent self. I think it goes deeper than that.
Culture helps supply the available options, the words in which I understand them, and the standards by which I judge them. What counts as selfish, loyal, fair, brave, embarrassing, or obviously sensible varies across communities and periods.
Henrich, Heine, and Norenzayan’s review of cross-cultural behavioural research found substantial variation in areas including fairness, cooperation, moral reasoning, self-conception, and styles of reasoning. Their point was partly methodological: people from Western, educated, industrialised, rich, and democratic societies are not a neutral sample of humanity.
That matters here because even my image of an autonomous individual making a private choice is culturally shaped. I can question the values I inherited, but I do so using capacities, concepts, and examples that I also acquired somewhere.
Culture does not replace the authentic self. It is among the processes from which a self develops.
Before “I Decided”
Neuroscience is often presented as having caught the brain making decisions before the person does. The actual evidence is more interesting and much less conclusive.
In the famous 1983 experiment by Benjamin Libet and colleagues, five participants made simple wrist or finger movements whenever they felt like doing so. They watched a rapidly revolving clock and later reported where the clock had been when they first became aware of wanting to move.
An electrical signal called the readiness potential began before the reported time of conscious intention. Libet interpreted this as the unconscious cerebral initiation of the act.
That result is worth taking seriously. It is not a laboratory demonstration that free will is false.
The task involved arbitrary movements with no meaningful reason to choose one moment rather than another. The reported time of intention depended on reconstructing a brief subjective experience using a clock position. The readiness potential appeared after researchers aligned many trials to the eventual movement and averaged them. Its beginning was treated as the beginning of a decision, but the signal itself does not tell us that a commitment had already been made.
A later fMRI study by Soon and colleagues found that patterns of brain activity contained information about an upcoming left or right button press several seconds before participants reported deciding. The prediction was above chance, not certain. Predictive information can reveal an early bias without showing that an irrevocable decision has already happened.
In 2012, Aaron Schurger and colleagues offered a different model of the readiness potential. In a task with no reason to move at one exact moment, spontaneous neural fluctuations can accumulate until activity crosses a threshold. If researchers look backwards only from trials in which movement occurred, averaging those fluctuations produces a gradual ramp. On this account, the early ramp need not be a hidden decision. The relevant commitment may occur much closer to the movement.
Schurger’s model does not prove that every readiness potential is noise. It shows that Libet’s interpretation is not the only one available.
The distinction between arbitrary and meaningful choices matters too. Uri Maoz and colleagues compared arbitrary button presses with deliberate choices about which non-profit organisation should receive a donation. They found the expected readiness potential before arbitrary choices, but not before deliberate ones. That was one study with a specific task, not proof of a separate system for every serious decision. It does show why results from purposeless movements should not be casually generalised to apologies, careers, relationships, or justice.
The careful conclusion is not that neuroscience has located the instant free will disappears. It is that decisions involve processes outside awareness, that reported intention is an imperfect measurement, and that the conscious story arrives with less access to its own construction than it feels like it has.
That is enough to make simple self-authorship doubtful. It is not enough to settle metaphysics with an EEG trace.
Unpredictable Is Not Uncaused
The claim that choices have histories is weaker than the claim that the whole universe is deterministic.
Causal determinism says, roughly, that the state of the world at one time, together with the laws of nature, fixes what follows. Whether our world satisfies that description remains disputed. Neuroscience cannot resolve the interpretation of quantum mechanics or deliver a final theory of physics.
The causal-history argument does not require strict determinism.
A system can be deterministic and still impossible for us to predict. Chaotic systems can be extraordinarily sensitive to tiny differences in their starting conditions. Limited measurements and limited computing power quickly make their later states inaccessible. Complexity therefore gives us uncertainty, not a gap in causation.
Genuine randomness would not provide the authorship I am looking for either. If an undetermined physical event changed which email I sent, that would make the outcome less necessitated. It would not make the event something I chose about myself.
I do not know whether every detail of my decision was fixed in advance. I do know that unpredictability is not the same thing as freedom, and randomness is not the same thing as control.
A History Is Not a Sentence
Waiting until morning changed my decision. Deleting the draft prevented one future and helped produce another. Understanding why I managed it does not make the result meaningless. It shows me which conditions might help me do it again.
Every choice has a history, but every choice also joins that history. What I do changes the environment that I and other people will choose within next.
That is where Part 4, Choice Still Matters, begins. If choices have causes, they can still matter for the simplest possible reason: choices are causes too.
